In the Green: A Look at Cannabis Industry Highs

As the smoke settles from America's Fourth of July celebrations, the figurative firecrackers popping in the cannabis industry are only just beginning. This July brought more than just patriotic fireworks; it ignited significant growth and expansion in the cannabis market.

A Mountain High Experience

The month kicked off with business booming in Colorado after a relaxing and fun weekend where outdoor exploring goes hand in hand with cannabis consumption. Hiking expeditions taken by passionate cannabis enthusiasts were abuzz with activities such as rock climbing and live music concerts.

It wasn't just the breath-taking landscapes that made this trip worthwhile, though. Numerous folks from the industry, such as team members from Sunburn Cannabis, were also present, making the event an enriching mix of leisure and networking.

An Industry Milestone in Maryland

Meanwhile, Maryland was celebrating something even bigger: the start of legal cannabis sales. In its initial week, the state saw total sales reaching an impressive $10.4 million, a significant growth from 2022's July 4th weekend medical sales of $4 million.

Interestingly, while this increase in overall sales was celebrated, the average adult-use sales basket saw a marginal decrease compared to medical sales. From an average medical basket of about $90 prior to the launch of adult use, the average expenditure fell to roughly $83.

Still, this isn't an alarming statistic. In fact, it's standard for adult-use baskets to be smaller than their medical counterparts. Additionally, the $83 sales basket is above average compared to other markets, hinting that this price decrease may be influenced more by higher demand than market price adjustments.

Holiday Sales Boom

Fourth of July holidays brought with it a surge in cannabis consumption with some interesting trends visible across product categories. Beverages led the charge with an overall sales increase of 16.5% across all markets under review. Other categories like pre-rolls also saw increased attraction, and smaller categories like tinctures and topicals showed growth too. However, not all enjoyed this booming business — flower and vapor pen sales showed some minor declines.

Predicting Future Growth

Looking at the road ahead, experts predict a healthy growth rate for the overall market. It's estimated that the total sales in the state of Maryland will reach $898 million in 2023, marking a 76% growth rate over the $509 million medical sales in 2022. Subsequent years are also expected to show good progression, with an incremental increase to $949 million predicted for 2024.

These numbers, although impressive, are expected to be a conservative forecast. As the consumer base widens and higher-margin products become popular, growth rates could well surpass these predictions, making this an industry to watch closely.

The explosive growth in the cannabis market is not an isolated incident limited to certain states or popular holidays. It's a nationwide trend. With two large markets, Missouri and Maryland, kicking off in 2023, and potential legalization on the horizon for Ohio, the cannabis industry seems to be riding a wave of optimism and opportunity. Even as federal laws evolve and more states come onboard, the industry continues to grow from within — a trend that shows no signs of slowing down.
